Tibia and fibula anatomy. The fibula or calf bone is a leg bone located on the lateral side of the tibia with which it is connected above and below. The fibula helps stabilize and support your leg body ankle and leg muscles. The fibula is found laterally to the tibia and is much thinner.

Beside it more toward the outside of the leg is the fibula. When you feel your shinbone this is what youre feeling. It is the smaller of the two bones and in proportion to its length the slenderest of all the long bones.

The tibia or shin bone is the larger bone in your lower leg. Now lets look at the tibia bone which is the larger of the two leg bones located medially. Out of two bones the tibia is called shin bone whereas fibula is called calf bone.

The tibia and fibula are bound together at this spot by a thickening of interosseous membrane in the inferiordistal tibiofibular joint. It runs parallel to the tibia a larger bone that also forms the shin and attaches the ankle and knee joint. The fibula is the slenderest of all the long bones.

As it does not articulate with the femur at the knee joint its main function is to act as an attachment for muscles and not as a weight bearer. The larger tibia or shinbone is located medial to the fibula and bears most of the weight. The tibia forms part of the knee joint.

The fibula along with the tibia makes up the bones of the leg. Its lower margin features a rough depression for the attachment of the articular capsule of the ankle joint. This membrane keeps the tibia and fibula together and provides strength and stability for them.

The fibula is homologous with the ulna. The anterior surface is smooth and covered by the tendons of the extensor leg muscles. The ends of the tibia and the fibula both form part of the ankle joint.
