Cnidarians Anatomy

The body wall of a cnidarian consists of three layers an outer layer known as the epidermis a middle layer called the mesoglea and an inner layer referred to as the gastrodermis. They develop from two embryonic layers.

The mesoglea acts as little more than a glue in some cnidarians while making up most of the animal as in the case of the jellyfish in other cnidarians.

Cnidarians anatomy. In vertebrates it is made up of many layers of cells and overlies the dermis. Nearly all about 99 percent cnidarians are marine species. As first defined coelenterates included not only the animals now designated cnidarians but also sponges.

Between the two body layers lies the jelly like mesoglea. Cnidarian also called coelenterate any member of the phylum cnidaria coelenterata a group made up of more than 9000 living species. Here is a diagram of the 2 different types of cnidaria the medusa and the polyp functions of these structures epidermis the protective outer layer of the skin.

Cnidarians have only two body layers the endoderm and the ectoderm. The shape is generally called a polyp form. Cnidarian anatomy anemone and coral are shaped with one end attached to something solid and the other end with tentacles moving out into the water.

Cnidarians contain specialized cells known as cnidocytes stinging cells which contain organelles called nematocysts stingers. Cnidarians are diverse and come in many shapes and sizes but there are some basic features of their anatomy that most share in common. Phylum cnidaria includes animals that show radial or biradial symmetry and are diploblastic.

Mostly marine animals the cnidarians include the corals hydras jellyfish portuguese men of war sea anemones sea pens sea whips and sea fans. Digestion respiration and excretion extracellular digestion occurs in the coelenteron which has in all. In invertebrate animals the epidermis is made up of a single layer of cells.
