Facial Nerves Anatomy

By the eleventh week the facial nerve has arborized extensively. Facial nerve nerve that originates in the area of the brain called the pons and that has three types of nerve fibres.

Facial nerves anatomy. Several structures of the facial nervedescribed as nuclei segments and branchesproduce the four components of facial nerve function. The nerve passes through the pyramidal eminence to supply the stapedius muscle in the middle ear. The greater petrosal nerve serves the lacrimal gland the gland that produces tears and the nasal cavity as well sphenoid frontal maxillary and ethmoid sinuses cavities in the skull.

Anatomy of the facial nerve the facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve to exit the brain when counting from anterior to posterior. To innervate these muscles the facial nerve courses across the region that eventually becomes the middle ear. The first motor branch arises within the facial canal.

The nerve to stapedius. All these muscles are derivatives of the second pharyngeal arch. It is one of the longest cranial nerves extending from the brainstem to the terminal end branches which are located throughout the face.

It arises from the pons region of the brainstem posterior to the abducens nerve cn vi and anterior to the vestibulocochlear nerve cn viii. One of the branches provides motor signals to the stapedius muscle which is situated in the inner ear. Branches of the facial nerve are responsible for innervating many of the muscles of the head and neck.

In the newborn the facial nerve anatomy approximates that of an adult except for its location in the mastoid which is more superficial.
