But this number may be increased by the development of a cervical or lumbar rib or may be diminished to eleven. They are twelve in number on either side. The flexible hyaline cartilage makes the breathing process easier.

There are twelve 12 pairs of ribs and all articulate posteriorly with the thoracic vertebrae. All are attached at the back to the thoracic vertebrae and are numbered from 112 according to the vertebrae they attach to. Three of those connect to non costal cartilage.
