The iliopsoas bursa is the largest bursa around the hip joint average size 6 cm 3 cm and is situated beneath the musculotendinous portion of the iliopsoas muscle anterior to the hip joint capsule and lateral to the femoral vessels figure 22. The other bursa on the inside of the hip area is called the iliopsoas bursa.

Most cases of hip bursitis are caused by overuse and poor biomechanics although a direct impact like a fall could also cause it.

They often facilitate movement and reduce friction where tendons or muscles pass over bony structures. A bursa that sometimes causes problems in the hip is sandwiched between the bump on the outer hip the greater trochanter and the muscles and tendons that cross over the bump.
