Knee muscle anatomy. The knee joins the thigh bone femur to the shin bone tibia. The femur patella and tibia are all bones within the knee. There are two main muscle groups around the knee.

It begins in the thigh area and extends to the head of the fibula in the knee. This long muscle extends from the pelvis to the tibia. These muscles work in groups to flex extend and stabilize the knee joint.

The primary function of the knee is a hinged of the lower extremity. The smaller bone that runs alongside the tibia fibula and the kneecap patella are the other bones that make the knee joint. It extends the thigh flexes the knee and helps rotate the tibia.

These motions of the knee allow the body to perform such important movements as walking running kicking and jumping. This long muscle flexes the knee. The quadriceps are a collection of 4 muscles on the front of the thigh and are responsible for straightening the knee by bringing a bent knee to a straightened position.

The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body. Tendons connect the knee bones to the leg muscles that move the knee joint. Knee function is determined in large part by the anatomy of the joint.

Meanwhile the muscles found within the knee include a variety of flexors and extensors.
