Atlas c1 anatomy. It connects with the occipital bone which is a flat bone located at the posterior part of the head. It is named for the atlas of greek mythology because it supports the globe of the head which is the skull. The atlas is one of the two upper cervical vertebrae also known as c1 which is the topmost vertebra of the spinal column.

In anatomy the atlas c1 is the most superior first cervical vertebra of the spine. C1 anatomy the c1 or first cervical vertebra is commonly called the atlas due to its unique position in the spine. It supports the weight of the skull.
