It continues distal to the patella as the patellar tendon.

The rectus femoris muscle also flexes the thigh at the hip joint and can simultaneously extend the knee whilst also flexing the hip.

The quadriceps muscle is the large muscle on the front of the thigh. In human anatomy the quadriceps tendon allows the quadriceps femoris muscles rectus femoris vastus lateralis vastus medialis and vastus intermedius to converge on the superior aspects of the patella on the anterior of the thigh which continues as the patellar ligament. It classically has a trilaminar structure.

The quadriceps tendon is the tendinous confluence approximately 3cm proximal to the patella of the vastus lateralis medialis longus and obliquus rectus femoris vastus intermedius and articularis genu. The tendon is broad based and has a trilaminar depth with fat between the tendon planes. A tendon connects muscle to bone while a ligament connects bone to bone.

At the top of the patella the quadriceps tendon is attached. The quadriceps tendon is a thick tendon extending to the patella made up of contributions from all four quadriceps muscles.
