Several muscles attach to and act on the femur.
Anatomy of the lower leg. It is an essential structure for any weight bearing activity such as walking stand running or jumping. This article generally follows the common usage. Common conditions that affect the lower leg include stress fractures compartment syndrome shin splints and muscle tears.
The ankle is a joint that connects the lower leg to the foot. Several muscles attach to and act on the femur. The anterior muscles such as the quadriceps femoris iliopsoas and sartorius work as a group to flex the thigh at the hip and extend the leg at the knee.
The lower leg contains two major long bones the tibia and the fibula which are both very strong skeletal structures. The femur participates in two major joints in the lower leg. The hip joint via its upper extremity and the knee joint via its lower extremity.
The thigh is between the hip and knee and makes up the rest of the lower limb. Its main function is to allow for plantar flexion and dorsiflexion of the foot. The major muscles of the lower leg other than the gastrocnemius which is cut away are shown in figure 9 12.
The peroneal muscles are situated on the outer side of the lower leg and their tendons attach to the foot. However in the world of anatomy the leg strictly means the portion between the knee and the ankle joints. Posterior muscles such as the hamstrings and gluteus maximus produce the opposite motion extension of the thigh at the hip and flexion of the leg at the knee.
Together with the upper leg it forms the lower extremity. When your non health science friends talk about the leg they mean the entire lower extremity. The lower leg makes up a large portion of an individuals overall body weight.
Near the ankle the peroneus brevis is closer to the fibula. The muscles of the lower leg called simply the leg by anatomists largely move the foot and toes. The lower leg is a major anatomical part of the skeletal system.
There are two peroneal. The ankle is made off the tibia and fibula of the leg as well as the talus of the foot. The term lower limb or lower extremity is commonly used to describe all of the leg.
