As compared to the small intestine the large bowel is wider. The ileum last part of the small intestine connects to the cecum first part of the colon in the lower right abdomen.

The colon is also called the large intestine.

Large bowel anatomy. The large intestine consists of the cecum ascending colon transverse colon descending colon and sigmoid colon. The large intestine also known as the colon extends from the distal end of the ileum to the anus a distance of approximately 15 m in adults 5 ft long making up one fifth of the length of the gastrointestinal gi tract and 65 cm 25 in in diameter. The large intestine has a length of approximately 15 m and a diameter of about 5 8 cm. Water is absorbed here and the remaining waste material is stored as feces before being removed by defecation. The rest of the colon is divided into four parts.

It runs around parts of the small intestine like a framework. The large intestine is named for its relatively large diameter not its length. But is only 15 meters in length which is around one fifth of the length of the intestinal canal.

The transverse colon runs across the abdomen. The large intestine is about 5 feet 15 m in length and 25 inches 6 7 cm in diameter in the living body but becomes much larger postmortem as the smooth muscle tissue of the intestinal wall relaxes. The ascending colon travels up the right side of the abdomen.

One of the most important macroscopic features are haustra which are sacculations or pouches in the wall of the large intestine. The large intestine also known as the large bowel is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and of the digestive system in vertebrates.
