A bronchus which is also known as a main or primary bronchus. The bronchioles or bronchioli are the passageways by which air passes through the nose or mouth to the alveoli air sacs of the lungs in which branches no longer contain cartilage or glands in their submucosa. These further divide into smaller tubules which in turn continue subdividing till they reach the alveoli.

The bronchioles are divided into three types each becoming progressively smaller. The thin walled brochioles are attached to the surrounding elastic alveoli. The primary bronchi have cartilage and a mucous membrane that are similar.

Located within the lungs bronchioles are tubular structures around 1mm in diameter 4 consisting of connective tissues and some smooth muscles that keep the tubes open. In diameter are known as bronchiole s which lead to minute air sacs called alveoli see pulmonary alveolus where the actual gas molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the respiratory spaces and the blood capillaries. No gas exchange takes place in the bronchi.

They are branches of the bronchi and are part of the conducting zone of the respiratory system. During exhalation these muscle fibers contract to help force air out of the bronchioles.
